Johnson, Giants vie for another win over reeling Cards

06/30/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ageless lefty Randy Johnson seeks a third straight win and a fifth in six decisions tonight, when the San Francisco Giants visit Busch Stadium for game two of four against the host St. Louis Cardinals.
The Giants won the opener, 10-0, Monday on the strength of a pitching gem - a two-hit shutout from reigning Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum.
Now 8-2, Lincecum gave up just a bloop single to Rick Ankiel in the fifth inning and a double to Albert Pujols in the seventh. He fanned eight and didn't walk a batter, tossing his third complete game in his last four starts. It was the third shutout of his young career.
Meanwhile, Johnson, a California native who'll be 46 in September, was 3-4 on the season after a 9-6 loss to the New York Mets on May 16 and a subsequent no-decision against Seattle six days later.
He's rebounded nicely in the last month-plus, however, picking up career wins 299 and 300 on May 27 and June 4, then adding Nos. 301 and 302 on June 13 and 24.
In the four triumphs, Johnson has allowed just four earned runs in 26 innings while walking four batters and striking out 16.
Most recently, he went seven innings and gave up six hits and a run en route to a 6-3 victory against Oakland in his last start.
Lifetime against the Cardinals, Johnson is 6-7 in 15 starts with a 4.12 earned run average in 102 2/3 innings.
For St. Louis, right-hander Chris Carpenter will try to stay perfect for his career against the Giants.
Now 34 years old, the New Hampshire native and former first-round draft pick is 3-0 in five lifetime starts against San Francisco, posting a 3.03 earned run average in 35 2/3 innings.
Win No. 3 came May 30 in California, where he allowed six hits and two runs in six innings of a 6-2 St. Louis triumph.
Carpenter has split four decisions since, beating Cincinnati and Kansas City while losing to Cleveland and the New York Mets. He's also 3-0 at home this season, allowing just seven hits and a single earned run in 21 innings at Busch.
Elsewhere in Monday's game, Travis Ishikawa hit a three-run homer, Edgar Renteria went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Juan Uribe had two hits -- including a solo homer -- for San Francisco, which has won four of its last six.
Brad Thompson (2-4) was touched for four runs on seven hits in a six-inning start for the Cardinals, who have dropped five of six.
The Giants won two of three games from the Cardinals at AT&T Park back in May and have taken five of the past six meetings in this series.

Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season. With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
